Is cord blood useful for SIDS research?

January 23, 2003

My baby passed away from SIDS. I had my baby's cord blood stored at birth with ViaCord (http://www.viacord.com). I was wondering if you knew if a sample of my baby's cord blood would be of use in SIDS research.

It certainly would be, not only for diagnosis of such disorders as metabolic diseases, but also long QT syndrome if not already done as part of the postmortem evaluation. Have the medical examiner send it to Neo Gen (http://www.neogenscreening.com) or Mayo Medical Labs (http://www.mayoclinic.org/english/labs.html) for "service" testing to supplement the autopsy, unless the testing was already done. If a whole case is tied to a particular research project, then contact the principal investigator.
