SIDS in Utero is not PossibleSIDS in Utero? No, this is not possible. This is a stillbirth, which does have a well-established list of possible diagnoses. Perinatal asphyxia is a likely consideration, and a routine autopsy may not reveal definitive findings of the oxygen deprivation. The placenta also needs to be examined. In summary, this is not an unexplained death and does not fit the history that we require; we cannot, for example, say this was a previously healthy infant. We have no basis at this time to conclude that intrauterine deaths could have the same etiology as the ones we are considering for SIDS. I hope this is helpful. |
