My empty arms are crying

by Pamela K. Johnson

In Memory of Elijah Clay Johnson
August 31, 1995 - January 28, 1996

reprinted with permission

My empty arms are crying
how I long to hold you tight
I can hear your cries of hunger
as I awaken in the night
I still can see your laughing eyes
my silly bubble blowing lips
How I wish just one more time
I could kiss your tiny fingertips
I thought that you were resting well
the morning you slept too long
As I picked up your lifeless form
I refused to believe that you were gone
They told me I did nothing wrong
and no reason they could find
Then they put me in a room
so I could hold you one last time
Too soon they took you from my arms
and left an aching in my heart
Losing you will always be
the pain that tore my world apart
